Lash lift aftercare, hour by hour for the first 48 hours
What to do at hour 1, hour 24 and hour 48 after a lash lift, the products to keep away from your eyes, and how to rescue lashes that got wet or look over-curled.
For the first 48 hours after a lash lift, keep your lashes dry, oil-free and untouched. That single sentence is the whole job. This post is the version I talk through with every client before I pack up, laid out hour by hour so you know exactly what’s allowed and when, plus what to do if something goes wrong along the way.
If you’re weighing up the treatment rather than caring for one, start with what a lash lift and tint is. If you want to know why it wears off after 6 to 8 weeks, that’s covered in how long a lash lift lasts. This one is purely about the aftercare.
Why the first 48 hours matter more than the next six weeks
A lash lift reshapes each lash around a silicone shield using a setting solution, then locks the new shape in with a second solution. When I remove the shield, the curl looks finished. Chemically, it isn’t. The bonds inside the lash keep settling for roughly two days, and during that window the lash is soft enough that water, steam, oil or pressure can relax the shape or push it out of line.
Once those bonds have set, the curl is stable and only your natural lash growth cycle wears it out. So the aftercare is front-loaded. Get the first two days right and the following six weeks look after themselves.
The first 48 hours, hour by hour
Hour 0 to 1: straight after the appointment
Your lashes will look very curled, possibly more than you expected. That’s normal. They relax slightly as they rehydrate over the first day.
- Don’t touch them, and don’t check them in the mirror by pulling the lid.
- Skip eye makeup entirely, including eyeliner and brow products near the lash line.
- If you’re heading out, sunglasses are a good idea. They keep wind, dust and curious fingers away.
Hour 1 to 12: the rest of the day
- No water on the lashes. Wash your face below the cheekbones with a cloth rather than splashing.
- No steam. Shower with your back to the spray and keep it short and cooler than usual. No bath, no facial steamer, no leaning over a boiling pot.
- No sweat. Skip the gym, hot yoga and anything that makes your face damp.
- No crying, as far as that can be planned. Sad films can wait two days.
The first night
Sleep on your back if you can manage it. Pressing fresh lashes into a pillow while they’re still soft is the most common reason one eye looks flatter than the other the next morning. If back sleeping is impossible, a silk pillowcase reduces friction, and a contoured sleep mask that doesn’t touch the lashes is another option.
Hour 24: the half-way check
By now the curl has softened to its real shape. You can:
- Wear eye makeup again, with one exception: no waterproof mascara, today or for the life of the lift.
- Let lukewarm water touch the lashes briefly. Still no steam, no swimming and no sweaty workouts.
If you had a tint as well, avoid cleansers on the lashes for another day so the colour keeps its depth.
Hour 48: back to normal, with two rules
From here the lift is set. Showers, swimming, workouts and side sleeping are all fine again. Two habits stay for the next six to eight weeks:
- Cleanse the eyes with something oil-free. Micellar water or a foaming cleanser. Cleansing balms and oils break a lift down faster than anything else.
- Don’t rub. Press a damp cotton pad over the closed eye and hold, rather than wiping back and forth.
What to keep away from your eyes, and what’s fine
| Keep away for 48 hours | Keep away for the whole lift | Fine after 48 hours |
|---|---|---|
| Water, steam and sweat | Waterproof mascara | Regular or tubing mascara |
| All eye makeup (first 24 hours) | Cleansing oils and balms | Oil-free micellar water |
| Lash serums and oils | Eyelash curlers | Castor oil or lash serum on the tips |
| Sleeping face down | Rubbing the eyes | Eyeshadow and liner |
Eyelash curlers are the one people forget. A lifted lash doesn’t need one, and clamping it can kink the curl at the base.
After 48 hours: the routine that makes it last
From day 3, treat the lashes as you would any hair you want to keep in good condition. A small amount of castor oil or a lash conditioning serum brushed through the tips at night keeps them flexible. Dry, brittle lashes lose a curl faster than nourished ones.
Brush them upward each morning with a clean spoolie. It takes five seconds and keeps every lash sitting in the direction it was set.
That’s the whole routine. There’s nothing to top up and nothing to book between appointments.
Troubleshooting: when something went wrong
One eye looks flatter than the other. Almost always from sleeping on that side in the first night. Brush the lashes upward daily and give it a few days. If it’s still noticeably uneven after a week, message me. A lash lift can’t be redone straight away, but I’ll tell you honestly whether to wait it out or plan a lift at the 6 week mark.
The lashes look crimped or kinked rather than curled. A very tight curl on day 1 is normal and it relaxes. A sharp bend that’s still there at day 3 means the lash set at the wrong angle on the shield. Nightly oil softens it, and it grows out with the natural lash cycle. Please don’t try to fix it with heat or a curler.
I got them wet in the first day. A splash is usually fine. Pat dry, brush upward, move on. A hot steamy shower or a swim is more of a risk. If the curl has dropped, it can’t be re-set until the lashes have returned to their natural state, so the answer is a fresh lift after 6 to 8 weeks.
The tint has faded already. Tint fades fastest at the tips and it’s accelerated by oil cleansers, salt water and chlorine. Switching to an oil-free cleanser slows it right down. A lash tint on its own can be topped up in between lifts if you want the depth back before the next appointment.
My eyes feel itchy or the lids look pink. Mild sensitivity for a few hours is common. If it lasts beyond a day, or if there’s swelling, stop all products around the eye and see a pharmacist or GP. It’s rare, but let me know so I can note it for your next appointment.
Planning your appointment around the 48 hours
The easiest aftercare is the kind you never have to think about, so timing matters.
- Book at the start of a quiet stretch. A Thursday or Friday lift gives you a weekend to keep things dry without rearranging your week.
- For an event, book about a week ahead. The lift is still fresh on the day and you’ve had time to sleep, shower and train normally.
- Don’t book the day before a beach holiday or a big workout. Water and sweat in the first day are the two things most likely to undo the result.
- Pair it with a tint in the same visit. They share the same aftercare window, so you only go through the 48 hours once.
Because it’s a mobile service, the aftercare starts the moment I close my kit. There’s no drive home in the wind, no reapplying makeup in a car park, and you can lie back on the couch for an hour if you want to. I cover the Hawkesbury, the Hills District, Penrith and the Blue Mountains.

Frequently asked questions
I got my lashes wet within 24 hours. Is the lift ruined? +
Usually not. A quick splash rarely does harm. Pat the lashes dry, don't rub, brush them upward with a clean spoolie and leave them alone. Steam, a hot shower or a swim in the first day is more likely to relax the curl, and if that happens the fix is a re-lift after 6 to 8 weeks, not sooner.
Why do my lashes look too curled or crimped? +
For the first day, a very tight curl is normal and it settles as the lashes rehydrate. If a kink or crimp is still there after 48 hours, the shield size or timing was off and the lash needs to grow through. Nightly castor oil softens it in the meantime. Never try to straighten it yourself with heat.
Can I wear mascara after a lash lift? +
Not for the first 24 hours. After that, a regular or tubing mascara is fine. Skip waterproof mascara for the life of the lift, because removing it takes the kind of rubbing that pulls the curl out.
Can I use a lash serum after a lash lift? +
Yes, from day 3 onward. Apply it to the tips at night rather than the roots. Oil-based serums and castor oil are fine after 48 hours and actually help the lift last, but keep every oil away from the eyes during the first two days.
Can I sleep on my side after a lash lift? +
Sleep on your back for the first night if you can. After that, side sleeping is fine. If you're a face-down sleeper, a silk pillowcase reduces the friction on the lashes.
