Maternity makeup looks that photograph beautifully

Most mums-to-be ask me for the same thing: to look like themselves on a really good day. For maternity shoots that usually means a soft, luminous base rather than a heavy matte one, because pregnancy skin already has warmth that we want the camera to catch, not cover. I keep the focus on fresh skin, gently defined eyes and a lip that reads natural in photos.

A few looks I’m asked for again and again:

• The golden hour glow. Warm, sheer tones with a cream blush and subtle highlight. Made for outdoor shoots in late afternoon light, which is when most Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains photographers like to book.
• Soft glam. A touch more definition through the eyes with fluttery (but believable) lashes. Lovely if your shoot mixes indoor and outdoor frames.
• Barely-there. For mums who rarely wear makeup. Skin evened out, brows tidied, a hint of colour. You will look like you, just rested.

If you have inspiration photos saved, send them through when you book. I will always tell you honestly how a look will translate on camera and on your skin tone.

Timed around your shoot, not the other way around

Maternity sessions are usually booked for soft light, early morning or the hour before sunset. Because I come to you, we work backwards from your photographer’s start time so your makeup is finished about an hour beforehand. That leaves room to dress, travel to your location and start the session feeling calm rather than rushed.

Third trimester tip: book your makeup for weeks 28 to 34 if you can. Most mums feel their best in that window, and it is when photographers recommend shooting.

Why at-home makeup suits pregnancy

Sitting in a salon chair for an hour is not most pregnant women’s idea of fun. At home you can wear something comfortable, put your feet up, snack when you need to and take breaks whenever you like. I bring everything with me, set up in whatever spot has the best natural light, and pack down before you leave for your shoot.

Every product that touches your skin is chosen with pregnancy in mind, and I always patch-check anything new if your skin has become more reactive, which is very common.

Where I travel for maternity makeup

I’m based in the Hawkesbury and regularly do maternity makeup across Windsor, Richmond, the Hills District, Penrith and up into the Blue Mountains. Travel within these areas is included. If your shoot is somewhere further afield, ask, I can usually make it work with a small travel fee.
