Eyebrow lamination aftercare that makes it last

Eyebrow lamination results depend heavily on what you do in the 24 hours after treatment. Here's the complete aftercare guide to protect your brows.

Fluffy brushed-up eyebrow lamination result on natural brows

Eyebrow lamination is one of the most effective brow treatments available for creating that full, brushed-up, fluffy brow look without daily effort. The results are striking and they've become one of my most-requested services across the Hawkesbury and Hills District.

But here's the thing most people aren't told clearly enough at the appointment: the result you leave with is not fully set. The brow hairs need time to fully bond in their new direction, and what happens in the next 24 hours determines how long the look holds and how even the result stays.

What happens during a brow lamination

Understanding the process makes the aftercare rules make more sense.

A brow lamination uses two solutions applied sequentially. The first breaks down the disulfide bonds in the brow hair, making the hair pliable and malleable. The technician then brushes the hairs into the desired direction and applies the second solution, which re-bonds the hairs in that new position and holds the shape.

The re-bonding process takes time to fully complete even after the treatment is finished. The hairs are technically in position but the bond is still setting for up to 24 hours after you leave. During that window, anything that introduces moisture, heat, or mechanical disruption can interfere with the bond and cause the shape to relax or become uneven.

The 24-hour rules

Keep brows completely dry for 24 hours. No washing your face directly over the brow area, no steam from a shower, no swimming, no facial treatments, and no sweaty workouts. If you need to cleanse your face, use a damp cloth carefully below the brow line rather than splashing water across your face.

Don't touch or rub your brows. The directional shape is set by avoiding any mechanical disruption while the bond is completing. Even brushing them too vigorously in the first 24 hours can affect the evenness of the result.

No makeup on the brow area for 24 hours. After 24 hours, a light brow gel or pencil is fine, but the first day should be completely product-free on the brows.

Avoid oil-based products in the brow area for the duration of the treatment. Oil is the main thing that softens the lamination over time. This means switching to an oil-free face wash or micellar water for cleansing in the brow area, and avoiding cleansing balms or oils around the upper face.

What good brow aftercare looks like from day two

From day two onward, the lamination is fully set and your routine can return to mostly normal with a few adjustments.

Each morning, use a clean spoolie to brush your brows into their laminated direction. The hairs will largely sit in place naturally, but a quick brush sets them properly for the day and maintains the shape.

From week two, applying a small amount of castor oil or a dedicated brow serum to the tips of the hairs (not the skin, not the root) at night keeps the hairs conditioned. Lamination can slightly dry out the brow hair over time, and conditioning counteracts that. Well-nourished hairs also hold the shape better.

If you had a brow tint or brow wax done alongside the lamination, be especially careful about the area for the first 48 hours. Tinting opens the hair cuticle slightly, which makes aftercare even more important.

When the lamination starts to relax

A brow lamination typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks. Fine hairs may relax a little before that. Coarser, thicker brows often hold the shape very well to the full 6-week mark.

You'll notice the lamination relaxing from the root first as new hair growth comes in unlaminated. The overall shape and brushed-up look stays for most of the cycle; it's mainly the very base of the hairs that starts to look different near the end.

The recommended gap between treatments is 6 to 8 weeks. Doing it sooner than 6 weeks doesn't allow the hairs enough recovery time between chemical processes.

A note on brow lamination suitability

Brow lamination isn't suitable for everyone. Very sparse brows, extremely damaged or over-processed brows, and some skin types need a different approach. If you have very reactive skin or eczema around the brow area, a patch test is essential.

I always take a minute before the treatment to look at the brow hairs and skin and confirm the treatment is appropriate. If a different approach (like a brow wax and tint) would give a better result for your particular brows, I'll tell you.

If you're in the Hawkesbury, Hills District, or anywhere across Western Sydney, book your brow lamination appointment and I'll come to you. Check out the full brow lamination service for more details, or get in touch with any questions about whether it's right for you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does eyebrow lamination last?

Eyebrow lamination typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks. Finer brow hairs may relax slightly earlier, while thicker coarser hairs tend to hold the shape longer. Good aftercare extends the result.

Can I get my brows wet after lamination?

No. Keep brows completely dry for at least 24 hours after treatment. No washing the face directly over the brows, no steamy showers, no swimming, no exercise that causes sweating around the face.

Can I wear brow products after lamination?

After 24 hours, light brow products like a tinted brow gel or a brow pencil are fine. Avoid very waxy or oil-based products as they can break down the lamination over time.

What should I do to maintain the lamination between appointments?

Brush your brows into place each morning with a clean spoolie and apply a small amount of brow conditioning serum or castor oil to the tips (not the root) from week two onward. Keep the area free of oil-based cleansers.

Can brow lamination damage my eyebrows?

When done correctly and not repeated too frequently, lamination is generally safe for most brow types. I always do a skin check before treatment and advise on whether your brows are suitable. Leaving too little time between appointments can dry out the hairs.
